The 140th Open Championship rolled into Royal St. George's Golf Club near Sandwich, Kent for the 14th time in the tournament's prestigious history and the first time since 2003. That year it was America's Ben Curtis who was a surprise winner of the only major championship in the sport of golf held outside of the United States.

The latest instalment of the most authentic golf competition on earth promised so much with two Englishmen battling at the top of the world rankings - in the form of Luke Donald and Lee Westwood - for the first time since the world rankings were created and in turn, leading the charge for the first English winner on home soil since Tony Jacklin lifted the famous Claret Jug at Royal Lytham & St. Anne's in 1969.

The return of Rory McIlroy to competitive action for the first time since his astonishing demolition victory at the US Open at Congressional just three weeks previous, was hotly anticipated and he was made the 8/1 favourite at the start of play.
