The 1920s in America was called the Roaring Twenties as a result of one of the strangest episodes in the history of the country: Prohibition. Michael A. Lerner’s book Dry Manhattan: Prohibition in New York City focuses on New York during this crucial time in the development of the city. With the passing of the Eighteenth Amendment in January of 1920, the prohibition of alcohol went into effect across the country. Lerner, Associate Dean of Studies at Bard High School Early College in New York City, demonstrates his passion for New York City as he so staunchly defends the rights of its citizens and looks at Prohibition as an appalling violation of civil liberties.

Immigrants and Politics

Despite the the Dry crusade's focus on New York, Prohibition failed due to the city’s diverse ethnic population and the ridiculous expectations of the Prohibition law; but Prohibition’s most important influence was in the development of New York City’s politics. Lerner greatly emphasizes the role of Prohibition in shaping the political structure of the city and shows how New Yorkers’ “cultural rebellion turned to political opposition.”
