By late 1935 Grumman’s F2F and F3F series were the mainstay of US Navy squadron strength; and already the Navy was reviewing its options for an eventual replacement for their current biplane fighters.

Monoplane Designs

Several companies responded to a design competition of November 1935; and of these Brewster and Grumman were chosen as the most promising. Grumman’s initial design, the XF4F-1 was still a biplane in the style of the earlier F3F; while Brewster’s XF2A-1 was a more advanced mid-wing monoplane. It was considered that the biplane format could not offer much improvement over the current F3F, which led to Grumman also revising their design to a mid-wing monoplane.

Grumman Dominant

This became the XF4F-2 which first flew in September 1937 and showed great promise, despite an unfortunate forced landing during carrier trials. To the Navy however, the Grumman seemed small and frail in comparison to the XF2A; with the result that Brewster won the initial production contract with their design, which became the F2A-2 Buffalo.
