World-famous drives such as the California coast, Nova Scotia’s Atlantic shore or British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast are worth a car rental. In Italy, where most visitors go home after seeing Venice, Florence and Rome, the Amalfi Coast is a magnificent drive to add to the list.

From Rome, the Amalfi Coast is about a two-hour drive and worth an extra week of vacation with the lure of the historic ruins of Pompeii and the brash and lively streets of Naples along the way.

Bon Giorno Sorrento

Suddenly, just south of Naples, there is a long tunnel. On the other side, is another world, the Amalfi Coast where the cobalt-to-turquoise Tyrrhenian Sea laps along bays and inlets and against the high white cliffs of the shoreline. Driving this route is like hang-gliding as narrow roads scoot around hairpin turns that open out onto gorgeous views of flower-covered stone walls framing the sea view. Italian residents and very brave tourists choose mopeds to navigate the narrow roads and easily whiz in and out of traffic.
